Plumbing Advice - Bursts and Leaks

Your first priority is to turn off the mains supply to the property.

You should know the location of your stop tap prior to an emergency but assuming you don’t, it’s often located under the kitchen sink, failing that check your basement or any utility rooms etc. If you have a direct water system such as a ‘combi’ boiler then the water should stop almost immediately.

If it’s an indirect system then you may need to ‘run off’ the cistern to stop the flow of water. To do this, open taps and flush the loo. When the water has stopped you can take some time to look at the problem. Is there any way of isolating the area so you can get the rest of the system turned back on (isolating valves are normally small brass fittings operated with a screwdriver)?
